Introduction

The encounter we will begin to look at this morning we see that, however a small a number, → there were some among the leadership of the Jews who were sincerely seeking truth…

Let’s read the passage together…

I A Man of the Pharisees vv. 1-2

  1. Nicodemus vs. 1

    1. → John notes that Nicodemus is a Pharisee. The Pharisees were a group of religious leaders known for zealous adherence and enforcement of the Mosaic law…

  2. → Ruler vs. 1

    1. John goes a step further to note that Nicodemus is “…a ruler of the Jews…” This means that Nicodemus was a member of the Sanhedrin.

  3. → Rabbi vs. 2

    1. This is a profound statement…

 

  1. → No One vs. 2

    1. This is an honest admission of the supernatural nature of the work of Jesus…

II The Heart of the Matter vs. 3

  1. Born Again

    1. → This could be seen as a general call…

 

  1. → How Can This Be

    1. → The truth of being born again has been a stumbling block for many and an area of contention for others over time…

III Flesh and Spirit vv. 5-8

  1. Life vv. 5-6

    1. → Physical Life

      1. → Signified by physical birth represented by water

    2. → Spiritual Life

      1. → Signified by spiritual re-birth of the Holy Spirit

 

  1. You Must Be Born Again vs. 7

    1. → Jesus now makes the call specific to Nicodemus…

  2. → Like the Wind vs. 8

    1. While you cannot see the wind, you feel/experience its presence. In a general sense you it is hard to tell where the wind is coming from or going to…

 

→ The point Jesus is making here is how, once we follow Christ, we experience the Holy Spirit…

How can I be born again?
